The FIFA U-20 World Cup has begun, showcasing the potential of future soccer stars. France kicks off their tournament against South Africa, but their roster misses a significant player: Desire Doue.

Under coach Bernard Diomede, the team aspires to mirror the success of previous champions like Pogba, Thauvin, Digne, Areola, and Umtiti, who won the U-20 title in 2013. This squad eventually became senior World Cup champions in 2018, illustrating how the U-20 stage can influence future achievements.

Given France’s reputation as a top national team, their group appears manageable. The team has cultivated its status as a leading program in international soccer, so expectations are high as they enter this event.

Group E consists of the United States, New Caledonia, France, and South Africa. While the draw seems favorable, history shows that soccer can be unpredictable, and surprises can happen.

Why will Doue not be available for France?

Although the Bleuets come prepared for the challenge, they are missing several key players. The U-20 World Cup takes place outside FIFA’s official calendar, meaning clubs are not obligated to release players. Consequently, many top talents born after January 1, 2005, are staying with their clubs instead of heading to Chile.

Desire Doue (20 years old, four senior caps) is currently injured, and Warren Zaire-Emery (19 years old, seven senior caps) remains with PSG under coach Luis Enrique. They are not the only absentees that weaken Diomede’s squad.

France is also missing other promising players from major European clubs. Lenny Yoro at Manchester United and Mathys Tel at Tottenham are not available, along with fullbacks Sael Kumbedi (Wolfsburg) and Jeanuel Belocian (Bayer Leverkusen). PSG’s Senny Mayulu, who scored in the Champions League final, is another notable omission. This list highlights how many young talents could have shined in this tournament.
