After coming out of retirement to sign with Barcelona last year, Wojciech Szczęsny has played 30 matches across all competitions, especially following Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury and Iñaki Peña’s average performances. This season, at 35 years old, Szczęsny was expected to be the backup to Joan García. However, with García’s injury, Szczęsny has ended up playing more matches than anticipated, raising concerns about his performances in Spain.
In an interview with Sportowe Fakty, the goalkeeper’s brother remarked: “I know Wojtek prefers to observe his teammates from the bench and step in when needed. I always see a spark in his eyes after each great save, and I love watching him play. He has enough experience and has played in the most important matches, so it’s time to give way to younger players. Especially since Joan García is a very talented goalkeeper. Wojtek is always ready, but I think he prefers to be a spectator rather than a player.” This surprising statement may not provide much reassurance in Spain.
