Germany’s coach Julian Nagelsmann has named a new squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September, bringing back centre-back Antonio Rudiger and dropping winger Leroy Sane.
The coach faces challenges with multiple injuries, missing key players like Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, and first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, along with defenders Nico Schlotterbeck and Benjamin Henrichs.
Nagelsmann has included three newcomers in the 23-man squad: Nnamdi Collins from Eintracht Frankfurt, goalkeeper Finn Dahmen from Augsburg, and midfielder Paul Nebel from Mainz.
Sane, with 70 caps since his debut in 2015, was left out following his transfer from Bayern Munich to Galatasaray this summer.
Rudiger returns to the squad after an incident in the Spanish Cup final where he confronted the referee. In May, Nagelsmann warned him that such behavior must not happen again, or it would lead to serious consequences.
Stuttgart players Angelo Stiller and Jamie Leweling, along with Nadiem Amiri from Mainz, have also been recalled to the squad. Dahmen joins to cover for the injured ter Stegen.
Germany will play Slovakia in Bratislava on September 4 and then host Northern Ireland in Cologne three days later. To secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, Germany needs to top their group, which includes Slovakia, Northern Ireland, and Luxembourg.
