The idea of being “too good to go down” is facing serious challenges this season, with several prominent clubs in Europe at risk of relegation.
Any of these teams going down would be significant, and the possibility exists that they all could.
Five notable clubs facing relegation this season:
Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles have become apparent after finishing 17th last year. Their decision to focus on the UEFA Europa League resulted in neglecting league performance, and while they won the tournament, their league position suffered.
This season, Spurs have struggled consistently. Thomas Frank was unable to turn things around, leading to his dismissal, and his successor Igor Tudor has had little success. The team hasn’t won a league game in 2026, prompting discussions about hiring another manager. A recent 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest has left them just one point above relegation.
Sevilla
Sevilla’s decline mirrors that of Spurs. Once a regular top-four contender, they’ve fallen into relegation battles due to poor squad management. Last season, they barely escaped relegation by a single point despite losing three of their last four matches. Currently, they are only three points above the drop zone, having lost nearly half of their league games.
Sevilla is on a four-match winless streak, leading to the dismissal of manager Matias Almeyda. Their next game is crucial against bottom-placed Real Oviedo.
Fiorentina
Fiorentina’s decline has been rapid and surprising, especially after consistently finishing in Serie A’s top half in recent seasons. They’ve reached multiple finals but lost each one.
This season, they are just two points clear of the relegation zone. Despite decent expected goals statistics, they have struggled to convert chances. However, they have shown improvement, with only one defeat in their last seven league matches, indicating a potential turnaround ahead.
Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg is facing a serious crisis, sitting near the bottom of the table without a win for over two months. Their last victory was against St. Pauli, the team directly above them. If the situation does not improve, they could drop to the second tier next season and may face a challenging play-off even if they start winning.
FC Copenhagen
While FC Copenhagen may not have the same profile as the others listed, they are Denmark’s most successful club, having qualified for European competitions frequently. Despite winning the Danish Superliga last year, they now find themselves only six points above relegation and haven’t registered a league win since November.
Most of their recent results have not gone well, with only wins in the Danish Cup and earlier Champions League matches. With five teams in the relegation fight, their current lead may be crucial, but with eight matches remaining, the battle isn’t over yet.
