The controversial goal scored by Matheus Cunha in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest was allowed to stand because the initial handling incident by Bryan Mbeumo was ruled accidental under current handball laws.
The incident occurred shortly after Diogo Dalot’s cross, with Mbeumo inadvertently handling the ball while attempting to control it. The ball then fell loose before Cunha converted the rebound.
Referee Michael Salisbury was sent to the pitchside monitor following a VAR review by Matthew Donohue, with the on-field explanation later confirming the key interpretation: “the handball offence is accidental, therefore the final decision is goal.”
Under Law 12 of the IFAB rules, an accidental handball is not penalised if it leads directly to a goal scored by a teammate rather than the player who handled the ball.
Had Mbeumo scored himself, the goal would have been disallowed, but because Cunha finished the move, the goal was deemed valid—sparking widespread disagreement from fans and pundits.
