England head coach Thomas Tuchel has addressed the media regarding his controversial decision to exclude Cole Palmer from the final squad for the 2026 World Cup. His remarks provide insight into the factors that influenced this significant choice.

Details: Tuchel pointed to Palmer’s recent decline in form as a key reason for the omission. He stated that the Chelsea standout had not demonstrated the productivity and impact he previously exhibited.

“Cole Palmer hasn’t been as productive and impactful on the pitch as he was in previous seasons. Moreover, he wasn’t always available to us during training camps and didn’t deliver the decisive performances we expected from him,” British media quote Tuchel as saying.

In addition to Palmer’s performance, Tuchel noted the intense competition within the Three Lions squad. He highlighted the presence of other attacking midfielders who are performing at a higher level.

“He’s competing for the right-sided ‘number ten’ role in the half-space, where we’ve opted for Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze. These are outstanding players; they’ve had a better season and have looked far more convincing and valuable in our camps than Cole,” the England boss concluded.

England is set to face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in the upcoming World Cup.
