Geopolitical tensions have prompted significant modifications to the logistics for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Iranian national football team has officially relocated its training camp from the United States to Mexico, as reported by CBS News.

The President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, confirmed that the move came after a series of emergency discussions in Istanbul, culminating in a final webinar with the FIFA Secretary-General. Following these conversations, FIFA has fully endorsed the request to shift the training camp. Initially, the team, known as Team Melli, had intended to be based in Tucson, Arizona. However, ongoing uncertainties related to the Middle East conflict and serious security concerns for the Iranian delegation necessitated a last-minute change.

The Iranian squad will now train in Tijuana, a city just south of San Diego and located right on the US-Mexico border. This location effectively alleviates potential visa complications and facilitates the team’s direct entry into the United States for match play. The federation president highlighted that Tijuana’s proximity to Los Angeles will enhance logistical operations, as Iran is scheduled to compete in California against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, before facing Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
