The paths of Míchel and Girona have officially parted ways, prompting the club to seek a new head coach.
Girona announced via its official account on social media platform X that Míchel Sánchez, the team’s 50-year-old Spanish head coach, has departed from his position. The decision comes after the two parties were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract, while Míchel’s existing deal was set to expire in just one month.
Míchel took charge of Girona in 2021, elevating the club’s standing and even guiding them to the Champions League for the 2024/25 season. Throughout his tenure, he managed the team in 221 matches, achieving 91 wins, 47 draws, and 83 defeats.
However, Girona’s performance in the current season led to disappointment, with the team finishing 19th in La Liga and ultimately being relegated to the Segunda. This disappointing outcome played a significant role in Míchel’s departure.
