Preparations for the Mundial are in full swing as FIFA announces significant updates to the VAR system ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

In a recent announcement, FIFA has officially approved additional changes to enhance the VAR system for the upcoming tournament. Referees will now have an easier process, as VAR officials are permitted to recommend reviews under specific circumstances.

According to the new rules, VAR referees can suggest a review if they determine that a corner kick was incorrectly awarded or if a yellow card shown to a player is later deemed an incorrect decision upon video review.

While FIFA explored other potential rule changes, only these two modifications were greenlit by the special commission. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to take place in three countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico, starting on June 11, 2026.
