The decision to host the 2026 World Cup in the United States has come under scrutiny from Dutch defender Micky van de Ven. The 25-year-old center-back, who plays for both the Netherlands and Tottenham, expressed his concerns regarding the lack of enthusiasm and festive atmosphere surrounding the upcoming tournament.
Van de Ven highlighted a disconnect among the American public regarding the event, stating that many people are unaware of the significance of hosting the world’s largest football celebration. He reflected on his own experiences during a recent visit to the U.S., noting a lack of awareness about the tournament:
“Do I feel the World Cup vibe in the USA? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Last summer I was here on vacation, and people didn’t even realize the World Cup was taking place in their own country,” Van de Ven admitted.

As the tournament approaches, the Netherlands has been drawn into Group F, where they will compete against Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. The Oranje are set to kick off their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington.
