Uruguay’s goalkeeper Fernando Muslera has made an unwanted mark at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first goalkeeper since 1966 to commit three errors that led to goals in a single tournament. This unfortunate record was solidified during Uruguay’s match against Spain, where a critical mistake altered the course of the game.

Prior to the blunder, Uruguay had been performing well against Spain, maintaining a strong tempo. However, Muslera’s error disrupted their momentum and ultimately contributed to their loss.

This incident not only proved costly for the team but also positioned Muslera in a historic statistic that no goalkeeper would hope to achieve. Following the mistake, Uruguay’s coaching staff decided to substitute Muslera, bringing in Sergio Rochet as his replacement.
