Croatia’s seasoned midfielder Luka Modrić has made history at the World Cup by becoming the oldest player to provide an assist in the tournament’s history. This milestone was achieved during the 2026 World Cup group stage match against Ghana, in which Croatia secured a 2-1 victory.
At 40 years and 292 days old, Modrić surpassed the previous record held by Edin Džeko of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who delivered an assist at the age of 40 years and 109 days earlier in the same tournament.
The updated ranking of the oldest assist providers in World Cup history now includes:
