Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal were denied a “clear penalty” in their goalless draw against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ola Aina seemed to handle the ball in the box after it struck his shoulder, but VAR decided that his arm was in a natural position.

Arteta contended that Aina aimed to keep the ball in play with his arm, which warranted a penalty kick.

Arteta reacts to penalty decision against Forest

“We aimed to win the game, knowing it would be tough given their style of play. We created several significant chances and a clear penalty, but we couldn’t secure a win.

“After reviewing the replays, I believe there was a clear intent to clear the ball, making it a penalty. I don’t understand why it wasn’t given.

“While we could have performed better, this issue occurs across the league for all teams. We must improve, especially when creating so many chances; we need to convert them.

“We created opportunities, but credit to them for being well-organized and disrupting our rhythm effectively. We aimed to find a goal in the end. We didn’t concede a single shot again, but we fell short in finding a way to win.”
