Chelsea has lost out on signing Douglas Luiz from Juventus in the January transfer window, as Aston Villa reached an agreement for him.

The team had thought about bringing the midfielder on loan for the remainder of the season to strengthen their squad.

Luiz is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, but that arrangement will end after he made only five starts this season.

According to The Athletic, the 27-year-old has “agreed” to move to Villa Park, and both clubs are “working to finalize the deal,” which includes a buy option.

BBC Sport reports that Luiz, who transferred to Juventus for £42.5m in June 2024, preferred returning to Villa rather than joining Chelsea.

Aston Villa urgently needs midfield help due to injuries affecting Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, and Boubacar Kamara.

Tielemans is likely to be out for a significant period due to an ankle injury he sustained against Newcastle United recently.

McGinn will be sidelined for about six weeks, and Kamara has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
