The 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco in the opening round of the 2026 World Cup has made history for several notable reasons.

Brazil’s national team has extended its impressive unbeaten streak in World Cup openers. According to statistics from MisterChip, the Seleção has now gone 21 consecutive tournaments without losing their first match, a streak that dates back to the 1934 World Cup when Brazil lost 1-3 to Spain. Since then, Brazil has not lost a World Cup opening match, achieving 17 wins and four draws.

Conversely, Morocco also made its way into the record books, albeit for an unfortunate reason. The North African team has now failed to win its opening World Cup match for the seventh consecutive time. With this draw against Brazil, Morocco shares the record with Bulgaria for the most World Cup appearances without achieving a debut victory in the tournament’s opening match.
