Bruno Fernandes has emerged as a strong candidate for the PFA Player of the Year in recent weeks.

The captain of Manchester United has been performing exceptionally well, helping the team secure a position in the Champions League spots.

Despite the team’s unbeaten streak ending against Newcastle on Wednesday, Fernandes continued to shine by providing another assist. His free-kick set up Casemiro, who scored the equalizer in the 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

The Portugal international has recorded seven assists in his last nine Premier League matches, bringing his total to 14 for the season.

This is his best performance in a league season, surpassing the 13 assists he achieved with Sporting Lisbon in the 2018-19 Primeira Liga.

Fernandes has six more assists than his closest competitor for the Premier League Playmaker Award, as Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki trails with 8.

He is now just one assist away from matching the Manchester United club record for a single season in the Premier League era. This record, held by David Beckham, stands at 15 assists from the 1999-2000 season.

Given his current form, Fernandes is likely to surpass that mark, and the Premier League single-season record of 20 assists, shared by Thierry Henry (2002-03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20), is also within reach.
