Bruno Fernandes has been a key player for Manchester United this season, continuing to demonstrate his leadership as captain.
The Portugal international has been named Premier League Player of the Month for March 2026, highlighting his importance to the team.
In four matches, he scored two goals and provided four assists, being involved in six of United’s eight goals that month.
For the season, he has netted eight goals and provided 17 assists in just 30 games. With his impressive form, United is preparing for potential offers this summer.
CaughtOffside reports that the club expects “massive offers,” with internal discussions revealing mixed opinions on how to handle any interest.
One source mentioned, “Some at United worry this might be the right time to sell Fernandes, but it’s a complex decision, similar to Liverpool‘s situation with Salah last year.”
They added, “Fernandes is likely to receive big offers from Saudi clubs, so if United wants him to stay, they may not fight too hard to keep him if he’s already considering moving.”
This division within the club is important as the situation is not just about resisting external interest.
Sources indicate that some feel this summer could be the best opportunity to sell, given Fernandes’ high market value and two years remaining on his contract.
Last summer, United and Fernandes were taken aback by a £100 million bid from Al-Hilal, which included a wage proposal of £200 million over four years for the captain.
He ultimately declined, but it remains to be seen if he would make the same choice if approached again this summer.
Manchester United’s Midfield Changes
This summer is expected to be significant for the midfield at Manchester United.
Casemiro is set to leave at the end of his contract, and Manuel Ugarte might be sold after struggling to establish himself at Old Trafford.
Consequently, United is anticipated to sign two new midfielders without the added burden of trying to replace their influential captain.
Last season, United avoided relegation, thanks in large part to Fernandes’ eight goals and 11 assists, finishing 15th overall with a total of 19 goals and 19 assists across all competitions.
This season, he has maintained his performance, breaking David Beckham’s record for most assists in a Premier League season for Manchester United.
With new arrivals, he seems to share the load more than before, reducing pressure on him while still being crucial to the team.
Matheus Cunha is already making an impact, initiating attacking plays, while Bryan Mbeumo has shown excellent form at the start of the season, shifting roles to take on the striker position.
Additionally, Benjamin Sesko has emerged as a reliable goalscorer, and Casemiro has contributed seven goals, frequently connecting with Fernandes.
While Fernandes is still a vital part of the squad, there’s less dependency on him now, making it crucial not to add the challenge of replacing him alongside addressing the departures of Casemiro and Ugarte.
Is This the Right Time to Sell Bruno Fernandes?
However, age plays a significant role in this discussion. At 31 years old, set to turn 32 in September, Fernandes continues to perform at a high level.
Liverpool recently experienced a swift decline with Mohamed Salah, who is leaving the club for free.
United may not want to pass on the chance to monetize Fernandes, particularly as they have expressed willingness to sell before.
Back in November 2025, Fernandes confirmed that United was interested in the Al-Hilal offer but ultimately did not pursue it.
Fernandes has a release clause for non-UK clubs, allowing him to be signed for £57 million (€65 million), with PSG and Al-Hilal frequently mentioned as potential suitors.
This means clubs outside the Premier League can bypass negotiations with United, making it unlikely for offers of £100 million to be repeated.
Given that targets like Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson are valued between £70 million and £100 million, Fernandes’ release clause may not cover his potential replacement.
Bruno Fernandes’ Conditions to Stay at Old Trafford
Any departure would also require Fernandes’ agreement. He has stated he will remain under two conditions.
The first is that United qualifies for the Champions League, which seems likely as they are currently in third place in the Premier League.
The second condition is clarity on the appointment of a permanent manager. Michael Carrick took over in January 2026, following Ruben Amorim’s departure, and will finish the season at Old Trafford.
With United’s resurgence and no formal contract with other managerial candidates, it appears that Carrick may stay, with many supporters in favor of this decision.
However, that does not guarantee he will be the manager next season, as the club is taking its time in making a commitment.
While neither of these conditions has been met yet, Fernandes will have answers by the season’s end.
Ultimately, when those answers come, United may face a tough choice: sell their captain and star player for a profit or keep him in the hope that he continues to perform well.
