The CONMEBOL Disciplinary Committee has imposed a significant suspension following an incident during the South American U-17 Championship. Palmeiras forward Eduardo Conceição has received a four-month ban for making a monkey gesture during a match, which he claims was a protest rather than an act of racism.
This controversy erupted during a match where Brazil’s youth team defeated Argentina with a score of 3-0. Eduardo reported experiencing racist abuse from an opponent, but his complaints were reportedly dismissed by the referee, who failed to implement the official anti-racism protocol.
In response, Eduardo celebrated Brazil’s third goal with monkey movements, intending to highlight the alleged cover-up and the inaction of the match officials. Following this incident, CONMEBOL also penalized Argentine midfielder Benítez, who instigated the situation.
Regardless of the context behind Eduardo’s actions, the South American football federation has deemed this gesture unacceptable and has issued the lengthy suspension. Additionally, CONMEBOL has requested that FIFA extend the suspension globally, which would restrict Eduardo from participating in any competitions with Palmeiras.
