The build-up to the 2026 World Cup is being overshadowed by a significant international controversy with political implications. The Government of Ghana has stepped in regarding national team midfielder Thomas Partey, who faced visa denial from Canadian authorities due to legal issues in the United Kingdom.

According to MatchDayCentral, the Ghana Football Association, along with diplomats, has filed a formal protest to Canadian authorities, emphasizing the legal principle that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. This intervention comes as the former Arsenal midfielder, currently with Villarreal, awaits trial in England on several rape charges, which he firmly denies.

The Ghanaian statement reiterates that being accused is not synonymous with conviction. Ghanaian officials are urging Canada’s immigration ministry to review its decision promptly and grant Partey a visa. This would allow the key player to participate in the Black Stars’ opening World Cup match against Panama, set for Wednesday, June 17, in Toronto.
