Ipswich Town are in the final stages of appointing Strasbourg’s Gary O’Neil as their new head coach, The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirms.
The 43-year-old is the Tractor Boys’ first-choice target after the departure of Kieran McKenna.
Discussions with BlueCo, owners of Strasbourg and Chelsea, have progressed positively. Ipswich expect to make an announcement next week if the remaining details are completed.
O’Neil is likely to bring assistants Tim Jenkins and Neil Critchley with him from Strasbourg.
Ex-Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also considered for the role, but O’Neil quickly emerged as the preferred candidate.
The club hope his appointment will help them establish themselves in the Premier League after returning to the top flight last season.
