Hugo Broos has characterized his relationship with the Bafana Bafana players as ‘unique’ following the team’s historic advancement to the World Cup knockout stage. This milestone was achieved with a 1-0 victory against South Korea this morning at Estadio Monterrey, marking the first time South Africa has reached the last 32 of a World Cup.
The win sets up a knockout match against co-hosts Canada on Sunday. Broos highlighted the strong bond he shares with his players, likening it to that of a father and son, particularly after Thapelo Maseko scored the decisive goal in the second half.
“The guys were working and fighting for every ball because they also wanted to be in the second round,” said Broos in the post-match remarks. He emphasized the synergy between himself and the players, stating, “The combination between me as a coach and them as players is something unique. I’m the coach, and a friend. The relationship between me and the players is very good.”
Broos expressed his desire to make a significant impact at the World Cup, saying, “I wanted to make a very good World Cup of this one, to end in beauty — and also for the guys. We started this journey five years ago. I’m so happy we achieved the next round.”
