In the 66th minute of the game between Mexico and South Africa at the iconic Azteca Stadium, teenage sensation Gilberto Mora made his debut, transitioning onto the field as he replaced midfielder Luis Chavez. This momentous substitution not only excited the crowd but also recorded Mora as the youngest player to represent Mexico and all of North America in a men’s FIFA World Cup.
According to Opta Analyst, at the time of his debut, Mora was just 17 years and 240 days old. His appearance places him among the youngest players to ever compete on the World Cup stage, securing him the sixth position in historical rankings. He now holds this spot just behind the legendary Pelé, who debuted at 17 years and 235 days, and surpasses Nigeria’s Bartholomew Ogbeche, who played at 17 years and 244 days.
