Liverpool player Dominik Szoboszlai has faced criticism for an error against Barnsley, where he attempted a backheel pass in his own six-yard box.
The Hungary international scored a remarkable goal from 35 yards out to put Liverpool ahead, and Jeremie Frimpong doubled the lead in the 36th minute of their FA Cup third round match at Anfield.
Barnsley then reduced the deficit when Adam Phillips took advantage of a mistake by Szoboszlai; instead of clearing the ball, he attempted a backheel pass to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, which went wrong and allowed Phillips to score in front of the Kop.
Criticism for Szoboszlai’s Error Against Barnsley
Hourihane noted, “It’s an amazing feeling for Adam scoring in front of the Kop as a Liverpool fan from the academy. It’s something he can cherish for life; not many can say they did that.
“However, it was a bit disrespectful from their player. I doubt he would try that against Chelsea or Arsenal in a Champions League match.
“I’m happy for Adam, but that was disrespectful from their player.”
Liverpool’s strength eventually showed, as substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, who were both signed for a total of £195 million, scored late to secure a 4-1 victory and advance to the next round.
Hourihane added, “I’m proud of our effort. Liverpool had to bring on their top players to secure the win. We got tired towards the end and didn’t deserve to concede those last two goals.”
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot commented, “I have my opinion, which I will definitely share with him. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a situation where we’re 2-0 up and then give away a sloppy goal that stands out even for us.
“It’s unhelpful to concede when leading 2-0. Normally, the other team starts to accept their loss, especially when we control the ball. But giving away an easy goal changes the mindset for the opposing team, and that isn’t helpful for us.”
