The German national football team is facing a significant challenge ahead of the crucial World Cup tournament. Longtime captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer may miss the event due to a flare-up of ongoing health issues.
Florian Plettenberg reports that Neuer is experiencing considerable discomfort from a calf muscle injury and will not participate in the upcoming friendly against Finland in Mainz. This raises concerns about his availability for the World Cup.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann emphasized the importance of caution in handling Neuer’s recovery, warning that hurrying the process could jeopardize the goalkeeper’s participation in the tournament. “We made a joint decision within the coaching staff that Manuel will not play for now. There is absolutely no point in forcing the issue and needlessly risking his health,” Nagelsmann stated.
“We simply want his recovery from this injury to proceed as calmly as possible. We have already informed Neuer of our decision, and he fully agrees with it,” Nagelsmann added.
In Neuer’s absence, Oliver Baumann is expected to take over the goalkeeping duties for Germany during Sunday’s match.
