Atletico Madrid have agreed personal terms with the Brazilian but are yet to strike a deal with Atalanta, who value him at around €50m.
United have already made contact with his representatives as they explore a move, with the club aiming to sign two midfielders amid the expected departure of Casemiro and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte.
