England midfielder Jude Bellingham has revealed the deeply personal thoughts that run through his mind during the national anthem.
The Real Madrid star said the pre-match anthem provides one final opportunity to appreciate the sacrifices made by family members before the focus turns fully to football.
“I think the anthem is the last chance you get to really be mindful of the people who have got you there and what it means to be from England,” Bellingham told BBC Sport.
Among those thoughts is his late grandfather, who passed away shortly before the midfielder made his senior England debut.
“I think about my grandad, who passed away just before my England debut. He was so patriotic.
“He was an Englishman through and through. He could give you every fact about every war, every battle, every king, and every queen.”
Bellingham admitted his grandfather remains at the forefront of his mind whenever he stands alongside his England teammates before a match.
“I do think about my grandad when that moment’s coming,” he said.
The 23-year-old also paid tribute to the wider support network that helped him reach the top of the game, including his parents and younger brother, fellow footballer Jobe Bellingham.
“I also think about the rest of my family and the sacrifices they’ve made to get me to this stage,” Bellingham added.
“My mum, my dad and my brother, Jobe, have all been so important for me.My brother has been a constant crutch for me.”
