Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti praised Raphinha in strong terms after the 6-2 friendly victory over Panama, highlighting the Barcelona winger’s ability to exploit space as a key tactical weapon ahead of the World Cup.
Speaking after the match at the Maracana, Ancelotti said he sees Raphinha as unmatched when it comes to attacking depth.
“What I ask of him is to stay close to the defensive line because in terms of attacking depth, he is the best in the world,” Ancelotti said.
The Italian coach made it clear he does not intend to restrict the winger’s natural role in the team’s attacking structure.
“I don’t see him as a centre-forward. I will never tell Raphinha where he has to play when we have possession,” he added.
Ancelotti also stressed the importance of allowing the forward freedom to express himself in the final third.
“His creativity and quality must come out,” he said.
However, the Brazil coach insisted that discipline without the ball remains essential for his system, with positioning and defensive organisation a key requirement for all players.
The comments came after Brazil’s final warm-up match before the World Cup, where the team impressed in a 6-2 win but also left Ancelotti with selection doubts following a strong second-half performance from several substitutes.
Despite the attacking display, Ancelotti noted that Brazil’s structure in the first half needed improvement.
“The team was not very compact,” he said. “We need to improve because defensive solidity is very important.”
