“I think his approach has brought something new. Going back to Gareth [Southgate], he came in during an era when we had lost our way for about four years, it wasn’t great, and the level of the players had dropped for some reason.”
“So we had the opportunity to just bring players in, build good relationships, establish a system, and he built on that. But then, all of a sudden, the players became superstars, and we sort of reverted to the old era toward the end of Gareth’s reign. I think he probably felt that it wasn’t just 11 men on the pitch anymore. Some of them now possessed authority, they were champions, they were this and that, so I felt that Gareth struggled with that return to the old ways.”
“Thomas came in and did everything right; we are starting fresh. We have all these great players, champions, and some of them are superstars: Declan Rice, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, but he is the boss.”
“And I think he did what was necessary: he chose his style of play, his philosophy, selected the type of players he needs, and he will stick to it.”
“Personally, I am very happy if he sticks to this approach. If he goes back to the old methods, it won’t end well,” Cole said.
