England captain Harry Kane has called on his teammates to play without fear as they begin their quest to end the nation’s 60-year wait for World Cup glory.
The Three Lions open their campaign against Croatia in Dallas, hoping to take the first step towards lifting the trophy for the first time since 1966.
Kane believes England must embrace the challenge and leave the tournament with no regrets.
“We’re here to go far in the tournament, that’s our aim, that’s our goal,” he told talkSPORT.
The striker, who has experienced both triumph and heartbreak with England, said players should not be afraid of making mistakes if they are fully committed to the cause.
“I think the only regrets you can have coming away from tournaments is that you didn’t go for it,” Kane said.
“You can make mistakes, you can miss penalties like I’ve missed, but I don’t think those are the moments that stop you from sleeping at night.”
Reflecting on previous disappointments, Kane suggested that failing to express yourself on the biggest stage can be harder to accept than defeat itself.
“I think it’s the ones where you feel like you could have given more, you feel like you could have been a bit more free, you could have just gone for it,” he added.
The England skipper insists the squad must be brave regardless of the outcome.
“Because when you lose, you lose anyway, it doesn’t matter how you lose, it’s the same result.
“I’d rather lose giving it everything, showing my best abilities. Whether you make mistakes or not, I’d rather go out like that.”
Kane ended with a clear message for England’s players as they prepare for their opening fixture.
“The message is just to be free and don’t be afraid of any outcome, and we’ll have a great chance.”
