Kylian Mbappe has acknowledged he must improve his defensive work as he prepares to lead France at the World Cup, insisting that greater off-the-ball contribution is essential for the team’s success.
Speaking to Le Parisien, Mbappe admitted: “I have to take another step forward defensively. I’ve always been demanding of myself, and I think I need to improve in that area. It’s important for the team, and I’m going to do it.”
He stressed that the decision is not new: “It has to start at this World Cup because we want to win it. I’m ready to do things right because I want it at all costs.”
“I’d sign up to not score a single goal in exchange for winning the World Cup. I’d do it quickly.”
Mbappe revealed that conversations with his younger brother helped shape his reflection, noting: “We often talk about the importance of defensive effort. My brother is actually better than me in that aspect.”
He accepted that criticism of his pressing and defensive involvement has followed him in recent seasons, despite his strong scoring record at Real Madrid.
