Former German referee Manuel Grafe has commented on the decision to award Germany’s goal during their 1-2 defeat against Ecuador at the 2026 World Cup.
In the buildup to the second-minute goal scored by Leroy Sane, Aleksandar Pavlovic raised his foot dangerously high while attempting to control the ball, catching Ecuador’s Pedro Vite in the face with his boot and sending him to the turf. Despite the contact, head referee Tori Penso of the United States chose not to disallow the goal, and VAR opted against intervening.
“We Germans say thank you, but this is ridiculous. It is a clear foul, the foot is obviously way too high and hits him in the face, but we accept the decision with gratitude,” Grafe wrote.
