Mohamed Salah has become the latest player to register a World Cup assist on his birthday since 2000, after setting up Emam Ashour’s opening goal in Egypt’s 1-0 lead over Belgium in their 2026 World Cup group stage opener.
The Liverpool forward, who turned 34 today, delivered the decisive pass in the 19th minute as Ashour fired Egypt into a surprise lead against the Red Devils.
Salah now joins a select group of players to provide an assist on their birthday at the World Cup this century, alongside Luigi Di Biagio (2002), Patrick Vieira (2006), and Ola Toivonen (2018), all of whom also influenced key tournament moments on their special day.
