മെയ് 2-ന് നടന്ന ബെർക്ക്ഷെയർ ഹാത്ത്വേയുടെ വാർഷിക യോഗത്തിൽ സിഎൻബിസിയുടെ ബെക്കി ക്വിക്കിനോട് സംസാരിക്കവെയാണ് ബഫറ്റ് വിപണിയിലെ ആശങ്കാജനകമായ പ്രവണതകളെക്കുറിച്ച് തുറന്നു പറഞ്ഞത്. ഹ്രസ്വകാല ഓപ്ഷനുകൾ മുതൽ പ്രവചന വിപണികൾ (prediction markets) വരെയുള്ള ഊഹക്കച്ചവടങ്ങൾ വർധിക്കുന്നതിനെ അദ്ദേഹം വിമർശിച്ചു. ഇത്തരം പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നിക്ഷേപത്തിന് പകരം കാസിനോ സ്വഭാവമാണ് കാണിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വിലയിരുത്തി.
“നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു ദിവസത്തെ ഓപ്ഷനുകൾ വാങ്ങുകയോ വിൽക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ, അത് നിക്ഷേപമോ ഊഹക്കച്ചവടമോ അല്ല, അതൊരു ചൂതാട്ടമാണ്,” ബഫറ്റ് പറഞ്ഞു.

Warren Buffett has issued a clear warning about what he views as a growing gambling culture in global markets, citing recent bets related to the US operation against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro as a notable example.
At Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting on May 2, Buffett told CNBC’s Becky Quick that emerging gambling trends are taking hold in the market. He criticized the rise of speculative trading, from short-term options to prediction markets, arguing that these activities increasingly resemble casino behavior rather than investing.
“If you’re buying one day options, or selling them, I mean, that’s not investing, it’s not speculating, it’s gambling,” he said.
“There’s nobody who can explain why they’re buying an option for one day, unless maybe the fellow who made 400 thousand dollars by knowing when we were going into Venezuela could do it.”
These comments follow a high-profile case in which a US soldier allegedly earned $400 thousand by betting on the timing of Maduro’s removal from power.
Buffett described this episode as part of a broader trend rather than an isolated incident.
“And the quantity of those things is just incredible. So we’ve never had people in a more gambling mood than now. But that doesn’t mean that investing is terrible. It does mean that prices for an awful lot of things will look very silly,” Buffett said.
“We have lots more regulations and everything now, but people spend their time figuring out how to get around the rules rather than following them. And that’s just a challenge.”
