RB Leipzig, the German football club, is facing a precarious situation during their promotional tour in Johannesburg, South Africa. Reports indicate that the city experiences one of the highest murder rates globally, compounded by alarming statistics related to armed robberies, carjackings, and kidnappings for ransom.

In response to these security concerns, the hotel accommodating the RB Leipzig delegation is under heavy armed guard. Players are prohibited from leaving the hotel unaccompanied, and their transportation to training sessions is conducted with militarized escorts, utilizing armored vehicles and motorcycle outriders.

This scenario has prompted reactions from authorities, with Germany’s Foreign Ministry advising its citizens to avoid downtown Johannesburg at all times. Despite the dangers, RB Leipzig’s management has maintained a composed demeanor. RB Leipzig director Johann Plenge remarked that the club’s intention was to experience the “real, tough side of South Africa.”
