Turki Al Al-Sheikh, a prominent Saudi sports executive and influential figure in world boxing, is reportedly set to invest in English football club Derby County. As reported by the Daily Mail, representatives of Al Al-Sheikh have engaged in discussions with the club’s owner, David Clowes.
The proposed investment is currently undergoing scrutiny by England’s Independent Football Regulator (IFR), which is tasked with evaluating whether the potential investor complies with the new regulations governing club owners and directors.
Significantly, the IFR is focused on the implications of Al Al-Sheikh’s investment, particularly given that the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) already controls Newcastle United. The regulator aims to ensure that this new investment does not result in a conflict of interest within the realm of English football.
Al Al-Sheikh’s interest in Derby County has been evident in recent weeks, as he has begun following the club’s official social media accounts, amplifying speculation about his potential involvement. This investment would mark his first entry into English football, following his previous ownership of clubs in Egypt and Spain.
