The Leopards are determined to elevate the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the global football stage. The Congolese national team is set to begin its World Cup campaign on Wednesday, 17 June, with a match against Portugal just hours away.
Yaone Wissa, a striker for Newcastle United, shared insights into the team’s aspirations ahead of the match. He acknowledged the significant challenge posed by the Portuguese side, which he regards as one of the premier teams in international football. Despite this, Wissa emphasized that the Congolese squad would not approach the game with an inferiority complex.
Wissa stated, “This is an opportunity for us to restore the country to the position it deserves. Portugal are one of the best teams in the world. We’ll be under a bit of pressure – that’s normal – but we must stay positive. They’re a better team than us, but we’re going to look them straight in the eye.”
