Hugo Broos has expressed concerns over the South African football league’s quality, citing it as a factor in the inability of Bafana Bafana to compete effectively on the global stage. Following their exit from the World Cup after a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Canada in Los Angeles, Broos reflected on the challenges faced by the national team.
The Belgian coach emphasized that, despite the loss, reaching the knockout stage marked progress in South Africa’s football journey over the past five years. “I think our World Cup was a success,” Broos remarked. “Nobody expected, but only hoped that we can be in the second round.”
Broos highlighted the significant gap in competition levels, stating, “I knew also that this is the level that is two levels higher than the PSL or local competition which majority of our team play in.” He pointed out the need for South African clubs to enhance their standards, indicating that relying solely on the success of clubs like Sundowns, who won the Champions League, is insufficient for elevating national football.
Reflecting on the match against Canada, Broos stated, “We saw it against Canada and in previous matches. But we have a good mentality, again I’m still proud of my team. We did well in this World Cup even though we’re out.” He acknowledged the areas that require improvement, affirming that this is a pivotal period for development in South African football.
