In a thrilling clash during the last-32 World Cup match in Los Angeles, Canada secured a historic 1-0 victory against South Africa, effectively neutralizing the threat posed by players Oswin Appollis and Teboho Mokoena. Canadian coach Jesse Marsch highlighted the significance of curtailing these two players, who are regarded as the most dangerous assets on the Bafana Bafana team.
Marsch noted, “We knew… Mokoena, Appollis and all their attacking talents, we knew if they had too much space, they can make use of it.” He emphasized that strategies were implemented to avoid chasing the South African goalkeeper, even as he attempted to slow the game down.
“The last thing we wanted to do was to get a stretched game and give their talented players room and space to be getting on the ball and creating combinations,” Marsch explained. He acknowledged that while South Africa had moments of attacking prowess, Canadian players succeeded in limiting their chances of creating significant opportunities.
