Portugal are preparing for a key World Cup group stage clash against Uzbekistan as they look to respond to their disappointing opening draw with DR Congo.
The European side struggled to break down a deep defensive structure in their 1–1 opener, with their opponents deploying a compact back five that limited Portugal to minimal clear chances.
Defender Ruben Dias acknowledged the tactical challenge, noting that similar systems are something he regularly faces at club level.
“I come from playing most of my club matches against teams that use a back five, so I have a very clear idea about it,” he said.
Dias stressed that Portugal’s success in such matches depends heavily on discipline and decision-making in possession.
“Respecting positional discipline becomes decisive in matches like these,” he added.
He also expressed confidence that Portugal’s technical quality should eventually make the difference if they execute their structure correctly.
“I believe we have players with enough quality that, by respecting our positions and making the right decisions, we can make the difference,” he said.
Uzbekistan are expected to present a similar defensive approach as DR Congo, meaning Portugal may again face a congested final third and limited space in attacking zones.
