Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has been awarded the retrospective Michelob ULTRA Superior Player of the Match for Nigeria’s famous 3-2 victory over Spain in the 1998 World Cup opener in Nantes.
The silky playmaker’s dazzling dribbles and visionary passes lit up the game, even as Sunday Oliseh’s thunderbolt goal stole some of the headlines.
The honour is part of a special Michelob ULTRA and COPA90 project reviewing 580 pre-2002 World Cup matches, as official Player of the Match awards only began in 2002.
At 52 years old, Okocha described the recognition as a huge personal milestone.
