Independiente has finalized a deal with Gustavo Quinteros, who will sign a contract until December 2026 to become the club’s new head coach, according to TyC Sports. The Argentine-Bolivian coach, who previously led Vélez to a championship, steps in after Julio Vaccari’s resignation, as the team currently sits at the bottom of Group B in the Copa de la Liga with just three points.
Quinteros’ first challenge will be the Avellaneda clásico against Racing on September 28. It is uncommon for new Independiente managers to debut against their main rival, with only four previous instances in the club’s history.
For Quinteros, the task is significant. He takes charge after the team’s exit from the Copa Sudamericana against Universidad de Chile during a challenging period. A win in the clásico would alleviate some pressure and provide much-needed momentum for an underperforming Independiente.
